Half The Sky Screening (+ What I wore)

Happy Friday to you all!! I hope all is well. Last night I had the opportunity to attend the screening of Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide at the Little Haiti Cultural Arts Center in Miami Florida. Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn are the author’s of the book, Half The SkyΒ which they have made into a documentary. Kristoff ad WuDunnΒ filmed in ten different countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the United States.

After watching Half The Sky I have been inspired to reach out to different organizations in my community and make a difference in a young girls life. Just because the resources and laws are different over in the other nine countries doesn’t mean that women in the United States aren’t being effected by the same challenges.

Not only did Kristoff and DuWunn turn their book into a documentary but they asked six actresses that are prominent in Hollywood to travel overseas and witness what women struggle with each and every day. Since most of the areas in the nine countries are poor they aren’t able to do much with the money that they do make. All of the girls and women who the celebrities met with have been either coerced into commercial sex trafficking, prostitution, or suffered from maternal mortality. It is devastating that they don’t have a say on how their bodies are used and/or are sometimes left with no other choice but to partake in awful activity just to make money to feed their children as well as to send them to school.

I don’t want to share all of the details about this documentary because it is set to air on October 1 & 2 at 9pm on channel WPBT2 so make sure to tune in and I will surely be tweeting about on Twitter {Follow Me at SassyWoman25}.

Dress: Bar III via Macys//Heels: Steve Madden//Purse:Rampage//Belt:Forever 21//Watch:Marc by Marc Jacobs//Necklaces: Betsy Johnson & Forever 21//Earrings:Gifted

The attire for this event was semi-dressy so I opted for this wrap dress by one of my favorite brands Bar III. I refer to it as my Confetti dress! My belt came from Forever 21 and it has been my go-to accessory when I wear black pieces. The dress was filled with beige, orange, purple, and black colors so I chose to wear my ruffled nude heels. They are comfortable to wear and not to high. I completed my look with my purple Rampage purse and gold accessories.

Before the screening took place WPBT2 hosted a reception which included complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvre’s. Also, I was placed in the category of Media Press and I was provided with reserved seating for the screening. I’ve never had my name on a chair before at an event so it was very exciting to see my name in print! My fellow blogger Deidre of Frugal Flirty n Fab was in attendance as well and were seated one row from each other.

It was such a pleasure to hear the lovely Gabrielle Union eloquently speak about her experiences over in Vietnam. I know that she is extremely passionate about this project and by any means possible she hoped to be able to give women the opportunity to change how women issues are handled around the world. Gabrielle and Dwayne Wade have adopted one of the ladies over in Vietnam and are going to make sure that she gets all of the necessary resources and guidance so she can finish school. How amazing is that? Many people feel as though you aren’t making a difference because you are only helping one person but we have to start somewhere.

Overall, the event was great and I being apart of press I was given a folder with valuable information about the film. I plan to tune into WPBT2 on Monday and Tuesday of next week and I hope that you will do the same!

Have a wonderful day and weekend! Thanks for stopping by ✌.

With Love,

Ashley

Wow, I cant wait to see this documentary. I remember talking about these same issues in my women and gender studies class in undergrad. Internationally women’s rights are far behind the US(which is still far from perfect) and we all need to be more proactive in achieving equality for women. Sounds like you had a great time and your outfit ROCKS!
